04 Selection

How to choose a link building agency

Six decisions, in this order, before you book a single sales call.

  1. Choose a campaign or per-link orders

If you know which pages need links and can judge a site, per-link services on this list charge $60 to $600 a link. If you want someone to pick the pages, sites and angles, managed agencies here start at $850 a month and most sit between $2,500 and $7,500.

  2. Name the link types you need

Guest posts and niche edits make up most per-link offers. Digital PR (Siege Media, The HOTH, BlueTree) earns links from journalists and costs more per link, but reaches sites that don't sell posts.

  3. Set your quality floor in numbers

Decide the minimum DR and monthly organic traffic a site needs before a link counts. DR on its own is easy to inflate, and two agencies on this list say so themselves. BlueTree, Editorial.Link, Loganix and FATJOE publish both numbers.

  4. Decide how much you want to approve

Editorial.Link, Loganix, Outreach Labs, Outreach Monks and Authority Builders let you approve sites before anything goes live. FATJOE and The HOTH's Link Outreach don't, and show placements once they're live.

  5. Check proof from a business like yours

Named case studies are the strongest public proof: Page One Power, Siege Media, uSERP, BlueTree, Editorial.Link, Loganix, Outreach Monks and The HOTH publish them. On the call, ask for ten live links from the last 90 days.

  6. Start with a test you can walk away from

Editorial.Link starts new clients with a trial link, Rhino Rank refunds a first order up to $550, and BlueTree and Outreach Labs run month to month. uSERP starts link building with a 3-month term, then month to month; LinkBuilder.io signs 6 months with a 90-day opt-out.

Which service type?Guest posts, niche edits, digital PR and white label work differ in what you get and how fast. link-building-service.com explains each type.

Rather not hire an agency?Run outreach in-house with the tools compared on link-building-tools.com, or with an AI agent such as BacklinkGPT, which pitches from your own inbox for $149 a month plus any site fee you approve.

05 The engagement

How a link building agency engagement runs, month by month

From the signed contract to rankings that move: who does what, when the first links land, and where the exit windows sit. Each timing comes from an agency on this list.

  1. Calls, proposal, contractYou + agency

Page One Power quotes after an intro call; uSERP puts scope and price in writing before you sign.

  2. Audit, target pages, anchor planAgency

Page One Power starts every campaign with a backlink audit and competitor gap analysis.

  3. You approve sitesYou

Per batch where it's offered: Editorial.Link, Loganix, Outreach Labs, Outreach Monks.

  4. Outreach, writing, negotiatingAgency

Runs every month for as long as the contract does.

  5. First links go liveAgency

Day 7 at Outreach Monks, about 3 weeks at Loganix, 30 to 60 days at BlueTree.

  6. Monthly reportAgency

Ask for a row per link: URL, anchor, metrics, live date.

  7. Strategy reviewYou + agency

Quarterly at Page One Power and on BlueTree's Starter plan.

  8. Early exit, term endContract

    uSERP: 3-month start (its FAQ: 60-day opt-out). LinkBuilder.io: 90-day opt-out on a 6-month term.

  9. Rankings start to moveResults

The HOTH: movement within 90 days, real results in 6 to 12 months.

Month 0 is the signed contract. Timings come from the agencies named in each row, as published on their sites (checked October 18, 2026).

06 The call

Questions to ask a link building agency on the sales call

Twelve questions that turn a pitch into terms you can compare. Each comes with what a good answer sounds like.

Questionnaire · 12 items
  1. What exactly counts as a delivered link?

Good answer A live, dofollow link in the body of an indexed page, on a site that meets the agreed floor. Anything else isn't billed.

  2. Can we approve each site before you pitch it?

Good answer Yes, with the site's metrics and a sample page. Five agencies on this list do it as standard.

  3. Show us ten links you placed in the last 90 days for a client like us.

Good answer Live URLs you can open today, on sites with real readers and topics close to yours.

  4. What minimum DR and organic traffic does a site need, measured how?

Good answer Two numbers and a tool, such as DR 40+ and 1,000+ monthly organic visits in Ahrefs on the day the link goes live.

  5. Do any sites get paid for placements, and how are those links tagged?

Good answer A straight answer for each link type, including how any paid placement is marked on the page.

  6. Who writes the articles, and can we review them first?

Good answer Writers who know your niche, and a review step before the article goes to the site.

  7. How do you choose target pages and anchor text?

Good answer From a gap analysis of your pages against competitors, with mostly branded and natural anchors in a plan you sign off.

  8. What happens if a link is removed or turns nofollow?

Good answer A free replacement for a set period. On this list that ranges from 6 months to lifetime.

  9. What's the minimum term and the notice period?

Good answer Month-to-month, or a short term with a written opt-out and no exit fee.

  10. What's in the monthly report, and can we see a sample?

Good answer A row per link: URL, metrics at placement, anchor, target page, live date and follow status.

  11. Who does the outreach: your staff or subcontractors?

Good answer Named in-house people, where they're based and how many accounts each one runs.

  12. Can we speak to a current client in our industry?

Good answer An introduction to a client, not only a testimonials page.

Red flags in a link building proposal

A made-up proposal with the lines buyers should push back on, and what to ask for instead.

Example proposal (made up) · Marked up

Link building services: proposal for Your Company

  1. Scope: link building retainer, 6 months

  2. Deliverable: 40 links a month, DR 70+ guaranteed

Red flag 1: A DR promise with no traffic floor

High DR is cheap to manufacture on sites nobody reads. Ask for a minimum monthly organic traffic number as well.

  3. Placements on our network of 2,000+ partner blogs

Red flag 2: A network the agency controls

Ask who owns the sites, whether they publish anything besides paid posts, and to see ten of them before you sign.

  4. Goal: top 3 rankings for 15 keywords within 90 days

Red flag 3: A ranking promise

No agency controls Google's results. Siege Media won't even promise a mention count. Ask what they will deliver, not where you will rank.

  5. Site list shared in the monthly report

Red flag 4: You see sites only after they're live

Ask to approve each site before outreach, as Editorial.Link, Loganix and Outreach Monks offer.

  6. Anchor text: exact-match keywords on every link

    Red flag 5: Over-optimized anchors

Ask for an anchor plan led by your brand name and natural phrases, with exact match kept to a small share.

  7. Lost links: not covered

Red flag 6: No replacement window

Six of the seven per-link services on this list replace lost links, for 6 months up to a lifetime.

  8. Content, setup and publisher fees billed separately

Red flag 7: A price that isn't the real price

Ask for one all-in number per live link. Outreach Labs, for one, prints its setup fees on its pricing page.

  9. Term: 12 months, auto-renews, 90 days' notice

Red flag 8: Longer than the market

BlueTree and Outreach Labs run month to month, uSERP starts with 3 months, and LinkBuilder.io runs 6 months with a 90-day opt-out.

  10. Reporting: monthly PDF summary

Red flag 9: No link-level list

Ask for a shared sheet with a row per link: URL, anchor, target page, metrics and live date.

How we picked and scored the agencies

We started from the agencies that Google's top 20 results, AI Overviews and Reddit threads name most for “link building agency”, “best link building agencies” and “link building companies” (Google US, October 18, 2026), and added the per-link services buyers ask about by name. Then we read each agency's own pricing, service, FAQ, about and case study pages on the same day and took the homepage and pricing screenshots shown in each file. No agency was contacted.

25 agencies checked; 14 publish enough to compare. Each gets 0, 1 or 2 points on eight lines, 16 in total. The score measures what you can verify before a call, not the quality of the links: an agency that quotes privately scores lower even if its work is excellent, and its file lists what to ask. Agencies are ranked inside two kinds (managed campaigns first, then per-link services), with ties going to named proof, then track record.

Prices are as each agency publishes them. Where two of an agency's own pages disagree, the file says so and lists the question to ask.

12 FAQ

Link building agency FAQ

What does a link building agency do?

It gets other websites to link to yours. A managed agency picks your target pages, finds sites, writes the articles or pitches and reports each live link. A per-link service places links on sites at a DR or DA tier you choose, for a set price. Most agencies on this list write the content too.

How much do link building agencies charge?

On this list, per-link services charge from $60 a link (Rhino Rank's curated links) to $600 (Stellar SEO's top guest posts). Managed agencies charge $850 to $19,999 a month, and Siege Media's digital PR starts around $12,000 to $15,000 a month. link-building-pricing.com breaks prices down by link type.

Are link building agencies worth it?

They are when your time costs more than the fee and you can define what a delivered link is. Start small: 3 to 5 links from a per-link service, or one month of a month-to-month plan, shows you the sites and the writing before you commit more.

How long until a link building agency shows results?

Links usually go live within a week to two months: Authority Builders quotes 7 to 10 days, Loganix about three weeks and BlueTree 30 to 60 days. Rankings take longer. The HOTH says to expect movement within 90 days and real results in 6 to 12 months; LinkBuilder.io says at least six months.

Is it safe to hire a link building agency?

Google's spam policies count buying or selling links for ranking purposes, including paying for posts that contain links, as link spam; a paid link should carry rel="sponsored" or nofollow. Ask each agency which placements involve a payment to the site and how those links are tagged.

What's the difference between a link building agency and an SEO agency?

An SEO agency covers technical fixes, content and links. A link building agency works only on links. Page One Power has done nothing but link building since 2010, while Siege Media and uSERP sell links alongside content and digital PR.

Should I pay per link or a monthly retainer?

Pay per link if you know your target pages and can judge a site: it caps spend and you can stop any time. Pay a retainer if you want the agency to choose pages, angles and sites, and to report on outcomes rather than orders.

Do FATJOE, Loganix and The HOTH actually work?

They deliver what they sell: a placement on a site at the DR or DA tier you pick, for a fixed price, from £60 at FATJOE, $100 at Loganix and $150 at The HOTH. Whether a link moves rankings depends on the site, so check each one. Loganix lets you approve sites first; FATJOE and The HOTH's Link Outreach don't.

What is a white label link building agency?

One that builds links for other SEO agencies and reports without its own branding, so the agency can resell the work to its clients. FATJOE, Outreach Monks, Rhino Rank, LinkBuilder.io and Stellar SEO all sell white label.

How many links a month do I need?

Enough to close the gap with the pages that outrank you, which depends on your market. LinkBuilder.io's own example: a local dentist shouldn't build more than 15 links a month, while 15 would be very low for a global CRM.
